For nearly five decades, Kadey-Krogen Yachts has earned a reputation as one of the world’s premier builders of true ocean-crossing trawlers. While many manufacturers use the term “trawler” to describe a wide variety of cruising yachts, Kadey-Krogen has remained remarkably focused on a single philosophy: designing comfortable, efficient, full-displacement vessels capable of safely carrying their owners across oceans.
Today, Kadey-Krogen yachts can be found completing the Great Loop, exploring Alaska, crossing the Atlantic, and cruising remote destinations around the globe. Their enduring reputation isn’t built on speed or flashy styling—it’s built on trust, seaworthiness, and thoughtful engineering that places comfort and safety above all else.
The Early Years
The story begins in the mid-1970s when yacht broker Art Kadey envisioned a recreational yacht inspired by the hardworking fishing vessels of the North Sea. Those commercial boats had earned their reputation through decades of operating in some of the harshest waters on earth, relying on efficient full-displacement hulls, exceptional tracking, and predictable handling in heavy seas.
Kadey partnered with renowned naval architect Jim Krogen, whose extensive experience designing commercial vessels helped transform those ideas into reality. Rather than designing a fast motor yacht, the pair focused on creating a yacht that could comfortably travel thousands of miles while using surprisingly little fuel.
Their first design, the legendary Krogen 42, debuted in 1977 and quickly became one of the most influential passagemaking yachts ever built. With its fine entry, full-displacement hull, wineglass stern, Portuguese bridge, and protected aft deck, the 42 established the design language that would define the company for decades to come. More than 200 examples were eventually built, making it one of the most successful bluewater trawlers in history.
Evolving Without Losing Its Identity
Unlike many yacht builders that regularly reinvent their product lines, Kadey-Krogen has spent decades refining a single concept.
Each successive model has remained faithful to the company’s core principles:
- Pure full-displacement hulls
- Exceptional offshore stability
- Long cruising range
- Fuel-efficient operation
- Comfortable liveaboard accommodations
- Easy operation for owner-operators
Over the years, the lineup expanded to meet different cruising styles while preserving the same seaworthy DNA. From the shoal-draft Krogen 38 Cutter to the liveaboard-focused Krogen 58 and today’s modern Open Series, every new model reflects incremental improvements rather than radical departures from the original vision.
That consistency has become one of Kadey-Krogen’s greatest strengths. Owners know exactly what they’re buying: a yacht designed first and foremost to travel safely and comfortably, no matter where the voyage leads.
Built in Taiwan, Finished to Exacting Standards

Although Kadey-Krogen is an American company, its yachts have long been built in Taiwan, a country that became a global center for quality yacht construction during the late twentieth century.
Early production took place at Chung Hwa Yacht Shipyard before Kadey-Krogen established a dedicated relationship with Asia Harbor Yacht Builders in Kaohsiung. Since 1991, Asia Harbor has served as the exclusive builder for Kadey-Krogen yachts, creating one of the longest-running builder-manufacturer partnerships in the marine industry.
This decades-long collaboration has allowed the shipyard to specialize exclusively in Kadey-Krogen’s construction methods and quality standards. Heavy hand-laid fiberglass construction, carefully engineered systems, and handcrafted teak or cherry interiors have become hallmarks of every vessel that leaves the factory.

Rather than pursuing high-volume production, Kadey-Krogen continues to build a relatively small number of semi-custom yachts each year, allowing owners to personalize layouts and finishes while maintaining the structural integrity that defines the brand.

Standout Models – Legacy Icons
Several Kadey-Krogen models have become icons within the cruising community.

The yacht that started it all. Produced for two decades, the Krogen 42 established the blueprint for modern recreational passagemakers and remains one of the most respected trawlers ever built.

Kadey-Krogen 48 North Sea

Often regarded as one of the company’s most refined traditional trawlers, the 48 North Sea has earned a loyal following among experienced cruisers seeking true bluewater performance without sacrificing onboard comfort.
Kadey-Krogen 58

Introduced in 2000, the Krogen 58 raised the bar for luxury liveaboard trawlers. Its spacious accommodations, refined systems, and remarkable long-range capability made it a favorite among couples planning extended international cruising.
A Legacy Built to Cross Oceans
Few yacht builders remain as committed to their founding philosophy as Kadey-Krogen. While boating trends have shifted toward faster, larger, and increasingly complex yachts, the company has continued to refine the principles established nearly 50 years ago: efficiency, comfort, safety, and genuine offshore capability.
That unwavering focus has earned Kadey-Krogen an exceptional reputation among experienced cruisers. Whether navigating the Intracoastal Waterway, completing the Great Loop, or setting a course for another continent, owners know they’re aboard a yacht engineered for the journey itself, not just the destination.
In an industry where trends often come and go, Kadey-Krogen’s enduring legacy is proof that timeless design, careful craftsmanship, and seaworthy engineering never go out of style.
