Market Value Factors & Known Issues

FactorDescription & Impact on Value
In-Mast Furling JammingOriginal Z-Spar / Z-Diffusion in-mast furling units require proper sail shape and batten tension to avoid jamming under loa.
Headliner Foam SeparationDeterioration of the foam backing behind the interior vinyl headliners leads to sagging in forward/aft cabins, requiring reupholstery.
Fixed Deck PortlightsDeck-integrated skylights and portlights require re-sealing over time.

Fixed PROP 3 BL

  • Type: 3-Blade Propeller
  • Meaning: A standard fixed 3-blade marine propeller configuration designed to deliver a balance of thrust, speed, and efficiency for cruising sailboats.

18X12

  • Dimensions: 18″ Diameter × 12″ Pitch
  • 18″ Diameter: The overall width/circle diameter of the spinning blades.
  • 12″ Pitch: The theoretical distance (in inches) the propeller moves forward through the water in one full 360° revolution.

RH30

  • Rotation & Shaft Diameter: Right-Hand Rotation, 30 mm Metric Shaft
  • RH (Right-Hand): Clockwise rotation when looking from behind the boat looking forward (standard forward direction).
  • 30: Fits a 30 millimeter diameter propeller shaft (standard metric sizing common on Beneteau/European builds).

E13

  • Hub or Specific Variant Designator: E13 Profile / Taper Code
    • Meaning: Refers to the specific hub design, taper configuration, or proprietary foundry/manufacturer code (commonly associated with specific cone dimensions, keyway specs, or casting series like Radice/Bruntons or specific Beneteau OEM sourcing codes).
    • E13 refers to the E13 model series by the Italian manufacturer Eliche Radice, a major OEM propeller supplier for Beneteau, Jeanneau, and other European boatbuilders.
    • Key technical specifications defined by the Radice Type E13 designation include:
    • Taper Ratio: 1:10 Standard ISO/Metric Taper (for every 10 units of length along the shaft cone, the diameter decreases by 1 unit).
    • Blade Geometry: 3-blade fixed bronze propeller designed for low hydrodynamic resistance under sail while providing solid displacement thrust when motoring.
    • Keyway Standard: Metric keyway dimensions matched to ISO 4566 standards for 25 mm, 30 mm, or 35 mm shafting.

51%

  • Expanded Area Ratio (EAR / DAR): 51% Blade Area Ratio
  • Meaning: The total surface area of all blades covers 51% of the full circle defined by the propeller’s outer diameter. This ratio is tailored to prevent cavitation while keeping hydrodynamic drag low under sail.

ZF

  • Manufacturer / Pattern: ZF Marine
  • Meaning: Manufactured by or built to the profile specs of ZF Marine, a major global provider of marine propulsion and underwater hardware.

Beneteau Oceanis 40 Q & A

Question:

Our SailDrive  is gone on our 2012 Beneteau Oceanis  40 . It was a SD50 serial number 0305-12. To replace it I need to know :

  • Is it a long  or standard  length shaft?
  • What is the gear ratio?

I want to replace it with an SD60.

Answer:

1. Shaft Length (Leg Length)

Your 2012 Beneteau Oceanis 40 with a Yanmar SD50 uses a Standard Shaft Length.

  • Standard Leg Length: ~395 mm (15.5 inches) from the mounting bed to the propeller centerline.
  • Long Leg: Extended legs (such as the +58 mm or +100 mm options) are typically reserved for deep displacement hulls, custom powerboats, or multi-hulls with high engine beds. Beneteau builds the engine bed in the Oceanis 40 specifically to accept the standard-reach drive.

2. Gear Ratio

The standard gear ratio for the Yanmar SD50 paired with the Yanmar 3JH / 4JH series engines used on the Oceanis 40 is 2.32:1 (ahead and astern).

  • SD50 Ratio: 2.32:1
  • SD60 Replacement Ratios: The Yanmar SD60 is available in 2.23:1 or 2.49:1.

If you choose the 2.49:1 ratio, you may need to adjust your propeller pitch.

When upgrading from the SD50 to the SD60, most owners choose the 2.23:1 ratio to keep their existing propeller setup as close to identical performance as possible.
