Steering System / Rudder

Important Note: Rudder Tiller ID500 D83 NM (Beneteau Part #082184) plays a vital structural role in preventing the rudder from dropping.

On the Beneteau 49, the under-hung spade rudder assembly relies on a rudder post that extends up into the hull.

  • The Through-Bolt Mechanical Stop: Unlike the steering quadrant above it—which clamps onto the post—the rudder tiller arm is secured directly to the rudder post using a thick horizontal through-bolt or pin.
  • Load-Bearing Alignment: This through-bolt passes entirely through the rudder post. It acts as a primary mechanical stop that rests above a bearing or structural collar, physically locking the vertical position of the shaft so the heavy rudder blade cannot slip out through the bottom of the boat.

Crucial Safety Warning for Maintenance

If you are planning to loosen, unbolt, or remove this tiller arm to address common issues like surface rust or galvanic corrosion:

  • Do not remove it while the boat is in the water without securing the rudder from the outside. Removing the through-bolt can cause the entire rudder to slide down and drop out of the boat, or cause severe flooding.
  • Support the rudder blade from underneath using blocking or straps if you are working on the hard. Alternatively, secure a temporary collar or clamping device to the top of the rudder shaft inside the boat before backing out the tiller arm bolt.
