1. Hatteras 53 Motor Yacht (53 MY)

• Production Era: 1969–1988 (The most popular variation, with nearly 350 built).
• The Design: A classic flush-deck motor yacht featuring wide, walk-around side decks that make line-handling safe and easy.

2. Hatteras 53 Extended Deckhouse (53 ED / EDMY)

• The Design: Hatteras eliminated the walk-around side decks on this model, pushing the salon walls all the way out to the boat’s full beam. It also featured an updated, enlarged flybridge and interior stairs rather than a ladder.
• The Layout: Because the salon expanded to the edges of the hull, the interior living space jumped from 112 square feet (on the standard MY) to a massive 174 square feet. The lower accommodation deck remained largely identical to the standard Motor Yacht.

3. Hatteras 53 Convertible (53 C)

• Production Era: 1970–1983 (Over 200 built).
• The Design: A rugged, heavy-duty offshore sportfishing machine. It features a low-profile deckhouse, a massive open cockpit at the stern for reeling in big fish, and a high-visibility flybridge optimized for spotting billfish.
• The Layout: Available in “galley up” or “galley down” configurations. To accommodate the massive aft cockpit, the forward interior living spaces are tighter than the motor yacht variations, and it was typically paired with larger engines (like Detroit 12V71s) to push through heavy seas.

4. Hatteras 53 Yachtfish (53 YF)

• Production Era: 1970s.
• The Design: A hybrid model. It essentially takes the full-profile, multi-cabin layout of the 53 Motor Yacht and grafts an open, dedicated fishing/cockpit deck onto the stern.
• The Layout: Inside, you get the spacious aft master stateroom and dual engine room configurations of the Motor Yacht, but outside, you gain a versatile lower cockpit deck perfect for fishing, scuba diving, or boarding a dinghy.

Decoding a Hatteras 53 HIN (Hull Identification Number)

For boats built after November 1972, federal law mandated a standard 12-character Hull Identification Number (HIN). You will find this number stamped into the upper starboard (right) side of the transom.

Hatteras embedded specific codes within characters 4 through 8 (the factory serial number section) to designate the model type.

The HIN Breakdown

• Characters 1–3 (The MIC): Always HAT (The manufacturer code for Hatteras Yachts).
• Characters 4–8 (The Model & Serial ID): This varies by the era the boat was built:
  • Early Style (1970s to Early 1980s): Hatteras explicitly spelled out the model code here.

• Characters 9–10: The month and year the hull was certified or built.

Example: A HIN reading HAT53MY375G273 decodes as a Hatteras (HAT), 53 Motor Yacht (53MY), production sequence number 375, built in July (G) of 1972 (2), for the 1973 model year (73).
