The Swift Trawler 42 was introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model and was built in France and imported to the United States. Beneteau USA began building the ST42 in 2006 and ended production in 2008. From 2008 to 2010 production was in France only. Murray Yacht Sales was awarded the Most Successful Introduction to the Americas at the 2004 Cannes Boat Show.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 42
A builder known for its sailing vessels brings efficiency and elegance to its first trawler yacht.

Bottom of Form
Beneteau, the largest producer of recreational vessels in France and owner of a major boatbuilding plant in Marion, South Carolina, recently rolled out the Swift Trawler 42, its first trawler yacht-and the company’s first powerboat to reach the U.S. market. Beneteau is already well known on these shores for its wide and highly regarded range of sailboats, so it should come as no surprise that Beneteau’s entry into the U.S. power market is a strong one.
The Swift Trawler 42 makes a very positive impression. I particularly appreciated the ease of movement about the decks, possibly a carry-over from Beneteau’s extensive sailboat design experience. The interior space is very well used and avoids the negative impact of squeezing too much into a space. At anchor, she will be a very livable boat for a couple and occasional guests.

Drop into any port in the world and you’ll find at least one French long-distance cruiser, typically an aluminum sailboat or Beneteau crewed by a scruffy, but handsome, guy in a Speedo and a girl who looks like she just stepped off the pages of Paris Match. The French, and Beneteau in particular, have long dominated production sailboat building. Moreover, Beneteau did more than build lots of boats, they proved that sailboats could be styled in new and exciting ways and didn’t really have to look like clones of Olin Stephen’s 1936 Dorade. The fact that this visionary boat builder is now into trawler yachts should be a wake-up call to the world’s cruising yachtsmen – it is now officially cool to own a trawler powerboat.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 42
While Beneteau’s new 42ft Swift Trawler is the perfect conveyance for the leisurely cruising couple, Trade-A-Boat also discovered that it has a deceptive turn of speed
The growing ranks of snowy-haired nomads, not the caravan-toting types but the boating breed, are fueling heady demand for trawler-type motorboats.
Add the high price of fuel and the scores of sailors changing to power and you have exactly the kind of market that Beneteau hopes will play into the hands of its new Swift Trawler 42.

BOAT TEST:: 2004 Beneteau Swift Trawler 42
By Capt. Bill Pike |
Humphrey Bogart should be test-driving this baby, not me. That’s what I was thinking as I watched Beneteau’s Swift Trawler 42 sedately cross Back Creek en route to her slip at Bert Jabin’s Yacht Yard in Annapolis, Maryland. I folded my arms across my chest and stood there smiling, admiring the boat’s classic lines from the balcony of Jabin’s office. By stretching my imagination only slightly, I could envision the Beneteau playing a feature role in any number of romantic old movies, although To Have and Have Not seemed to top the list. In spite of her French lineage and modern appearance, I could imagine the boat working her way through the cinematic shadows and intrigues of Vichy Martinique in the early 1940’s, Bogart at the helm. |

Beneteau Swift Trawler 42 Review
25th Apr 2011
Here’s the best value on-water apartment around
Elsewhere in the magazine I called a $170,000 Whittley 2800 Cruiser a good value-for-money “caravan on water”. And she is, considering what you get for your buck from that 28ft trailable boat. But at only $800,000, the Beneteau Swift Trawler 42 has to be the best value “on-water apartment” around. Where else in Sydney could you get luxurious apartment-sized accommodation, with a water view you can change daily for less than one million dollars?
Space saving design
An LOA of 44ft 6in and a beam of 13ft 7in have given the boat’s designers plenty of space to play with and they haven’t wasted any of it. The clever design starts in the aft cockpit where all underfloor crevices are used for storage. There are twin fish boxes, a lazarette and a massive central locker that even with the Onan generator installed still has plenty of room for a swag of extra gear.

Beneteau’s New Generation Swift Trawler 42
By Jonathan Hutchings
Marion, South Carolina, is an unlikely place to find one of the US boatbuilding industry’s cornerstone success stories. Yet this small southern town with its history rooted in textile manufacturing has re-invented itself as the home of Beneteau USA with its impressive range of production sailboats and, more recently, an impressive range of power boats. In Marion lies a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility with over 350 employees on its workforce.
Opened in 1986, the Marion factory has expanded to produce all the Beneteau cruising sailboat models between 32 and 47 feet and, since early 2005, the remarkable Swift Trawler 42.
