Beneteau First 260 – fast, responsive and well-balanced
The 260, launched in 1996, is quite a different boat to the 265 that preceded her. With a lifting keel, short, dart-like coachroof and simplified interior, she was a big hit in France but less popular over here, where the fixed keel and ‘offshore’-style interior of the 265 was appreciated. There was no doubting, though, that the 260 was a great boat to sail: fast, responsive and well-balanced. But for family coastal cruising she was, perhaps, a bit of a handful.

USED BOAT TEST:Jake Frith took a lifting keel First 260 Spirit from 1996 for a whizz round Chichester Harbour in winds gusting up to 30kn to see how she would look after her crew in a blow. The smaller sizes of Beneteau’s First range of cruiser racers have a reputation for being quick little boats, especially in light airs. I don’t think it’s unfair to suggest that many are bought as sporty little club racers, rarely slept aboard and used largely for summer weekend sailing. For this reason, we were surprised to hear that this one had cruised across the Channel a handful of times with no incidents. Her owner, James Lever, has made some clever alterations to make the cruising life a little more comfortable, including a narrow sprayhood with flaps in the sides to get the winch handles onto the sheet winches and a stackpack system to tame the mainsail. |
