Excess 14 Review

The first Excess 14 model to see US waters was welcomed by our commissioning Team in South Florida, giving us a chance to get aboard and review some of the obviously unique features this boat offers, as well as nuances that make life aboard just a little easier.

We come aboard via the starboard transom and were immediately impressed with the cockpit layout.

  • Immediate Impression: Size of the expansive cockpit, ease of mobility
  • Nice Nuance: The lengthy bench seat aft in the cockpit provides impressive seating capacity at 11.5 feet long, covered with comfortable seat cushions in a bold orange.

There’s a great sense of openness as you move from cockpit to salon, with wide double sliding doors proving easy access. The doors also combine with clear doors and interior ambiance to create an exceptionally bright living space.

Expansive Food Storage Layout:

As you see on the starboard side of the galley, there are multiple drawers built into the cabinetry for refrigeration and freezing. The sheer volume of food storage made possible here is truly impressive, and again is super accessible from either inside or outside through that wide glass door. The layout as shown is an option available above the stock layout, one that we anticipate being extremely popular with our customers.

Upon closer review, it becomes apparent that the drawers are nicely secured so as to not slide open under sail, yet easy to unlatch when needed.

Berth Height

Below in the cabins, aside from the obvious beauty, use of space, look at the height of the berths.

The relative ease or difficulty of climbing in or out of your sleeping quarters makes more and more of an impact the longer you plan to sleep aboard. From the cabin sole to the top of the bed measures less than 30 inches. A 10 inch platform surrounding the berth provides a comfortable step on either side, bringing the height down to only 20 inches. The berth height makes a huge difference in comfort, and has proven to be a design aspect that challenges many catamaran groups.
