The Grand Banks 36 Europa stands out as one of Grand Banks’ most coveted models, seamlessly blending elegant design with comfortable living spaces. It’s widely regarded as one of the finest coastal cruising yachts ever made.
Sharing the same semi-displacement hull as the Grand Banks 36 Classic, the Europa distinguishes itself with a flybridge that extends over both the aft and side decks. This design results in a more expansive flybridge than typically found on 36-footers and provides the added benefit of shade for the aft deck and interior throughout the day.
The Europa’s interior boasts a complete teak finish. It offers a choice of one or two staterooms. The voluminous salon features an L-shaped dinette to port, a versatile high-low table, and a helm station with direct deck access. The L-shaped galley is well-equipped with a microwave, refrigerator/freezer, and ample overhead storage.
While a two-stateroom floorplan, featuring a guest cabin with a sliding pocket door for privacy, was standard, the equally popular single-stateroom layout offers a split head design with a generously sized walk-in shower to starboard and an enlarged master suite with an island queen berth. Noteworthy details include the teak decks and cabin top.
For propulsion, a single 135hp Lehman diesel engine provides a cruising speed of 7–8 knots, or twin 210hp Cummins with a cruising speed of 10–12 knots.

Common Issues
Fuel System:
- Fuel Leaks: Leaks, particularly around the injector pump, can be problematic. For models like the 135, the injection pump is integrated into the engine’s oil system, necessitating regular oil changes and proper oil levels.
Cooling System:
- Overheating: Overheating and other cooling system issues are frequently encountered. Maintaining correct coolant levels, inspecting hoses and the heat exchanger, and addressing corrosion are crucial preventative measures.
Engine Performance & Efficiency:
- Injector Problems: Clogged or faulty injectors can significantly reduce engine performance and fuel efficiency. Routine cleaning or replacement of injectors may be necessary.
- Carbon Buildup: Short operating periods and low RPM usage can lead to carbon buildup, negatively affecting engine performance and lubrication.
Electrical System:
- Electrical Problems: Various sources can cause electrical issues, including the pressure switch on the fuel pump.
Oil Maintenance:
- Frequent Oil Changes: Diesel engines, especially those used for short durations or at low RPMs, require more frequent oil changes than gasoline engines. This is due to higher operating temperatures, pressures, and the potential for moisture and sulfur accumulation.

- Fuel System Problems: This includes potential failures of the lift pump and injection pump.
- Cracking: The cylinder head and exhaust manifold are susceptible to cracking.
- Coolant Loss: Users may observe coolant loss without visible leaks.
- Overheating: The engine can be prone to overheating.
- Head Gasket Failures: This is a particular concern with modified engines.
