Carver Shipyard, a company rooted in the traditional crafts of the North American yachting industry, began its journey in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the mid-1950s. Founders Charles Carter and George Verhagen initially built mahogany runabouts as a hobby in their garage.
What does Carver mean? The partners combined the first syllables of their names to create the Carver shipyard. The construction of wooden boats continued until the 1970s, when the company transitioned to fiberglass, a modern shipbuilding material that allowed for the creation of larger vessels.
By the 1980s, new ownership enabled Carver to expand its sales beyond the Great Lakes region, establishing itself as a national leader in the luxury motor yacht market. During this period, the Aft Cabin, a long-standing hallmark of the Carver brand, was first introduced.
In 1991, Carver was acquired by Genmar Holdings, Inc. and saw the launch of the elegant Voyager long series of cruising yachts and the Montego series. In 2000, the 57′ Voyager Pilothouse, the largest Carver yacht at the time, was unveiled.
Carver offered a complete production cycle, from hull design to interior design, with boats built at their Pulaski, Wisconsin, facilities according to the patented Carver Advanced Structural Technology (C.A.S.T. System), which ensured full control over all processes.
In 2004, Carver started Marquis Yachts, a series of Italian-designed motoryachts built in Pulaski, Wisconsin. In 2009, Carver, as part of the Genmar Corp., declared chapter XI bankruptcy and permanently closed on July 30, 2021.
