Lock Crowther 1940-1993
Lock Crowther, a renowned Australian multihull designer, began his career at 17, building his first trimaran, BUNYIP, in 1959. Its success, including a victory at the 1960 Easter regatta, led to his design career. A member of the Amateur Yacht Research Society, Crowther gained international recognition in 1966 when his trimaran BRANDERSNACH won the Sydney to Hobart race, and further in 1969 when a Kraken 40 tri won the New York to Bermuda race with him aboard.
Over 2500 of Crowther’s designs were built, including the Bucaneer & Kraken series trimarans, Spindrift 45 & Catana 40 cats, and other cruising, racing, charter/commercial, and power cats and tris. He developed innovative techniques like GRP-foam sandwich construction for SPIRIT OF AMERICA and “bulbous bows” to reduce pitching.
Brett Crowther took the helm in 1993 with Crowther Pty Ltd shutting their doors in July 2004. Brett moved on to join INCAT P/L to form INCAT- CROWTHER, building commercial vessels.
