Beneteau Swift Trawler 52

For Beneteau, the world’s largest sailboat manufacturer, the transition to trawler yachts was a logical progression. The 150-year-old French company had dabbled in powerboats for decades, but the Swift Trawler 52 is clearly aimed at two markets: sailors looking for a “sailorish” powerboat, and skippers looking for a comfortable coastal cruiser.
Sailors, especially those with experience either owning or chartering Beneteaus, will find many familiar design cues, such as the handrails located everywhere you might need to hang on. American sailors will also find a “Euro-ness” about the Swift 52 that may seem foreign at first, but soon feels natural.

“There were fifty Americans ready to test the Beneteau ST52 yesterday, but they couldn’t the seas were too rough,” JW Marine’s Adam Waters explains on the train from Paris to Nantes.
Adam is my host for a few days’ touring through various Beneteau factories. Our trip will culminate with our own test of the Beneteau ST52 weather permitting.
A significant section of the route to the west coast of France traces the River Loire, which seems to have quite a current  perhaps the effect of the same storm off Brittany whose aftermath had prevented the 50 Americans from experiencing the ST52 in full flight. I watch rowboats straining their tethers as chunks of debris hurtle rapidly downstream, while Adam fills me in on the history of Beneteau and JW Marine, the family company founded to bring Beneteau powerboats to Australia.

Stylishly swift
It’s not every day that 50 or more dolphins surf your bow wave in Sydney Harbour, leap and dive, bare their white bellies, then look up at you with a Flipper-like nod of approval. But they did just that during a rousing welcome for Beneteau’s new Swift Trawler 52, the giant French yard’s biggest powerboat ever, and a real performer in keeping with the yard’s reputation.

French Connection: Beneteau Swift Trawler 52

The 154-mile Okeechobee Waterway, which connects Fort Myers and Stuart, Florida, has had its ups and downs since it opened in 1937. Hurricanes and tropical storms have had their damaging effects, and just when the waterway seemed to recover from those events, along came a historic two-year drought to reverse its fortune again. But in August 2008, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reopened the Okeechobee Waterway after drenching rains from Tropical Storm Fay replenished its water levels. I always wanted to travel the waterway, so when I heard Wayne Burdick, president of Beneteau USA, wanted to move his new Swift Trawler 52 from the west coast to the east coast of Florida this winter, I jumped at the chance to join his delivery crew.
